Fetal TR

1–2 minutes

A 30 weeks old pregnancy came to the fetal cardio unit of SGRH. Outside USG revealed that there is a new onset of tricuspid regurgitation and needs a cardiac opinion. Fetal echo was performed at our unit and detailed assessment revealed a moderate degree of tricuspid regurgitation and narrowing of ductus arteriosus. Ductus areteriosus is a connection needed before birth and closes after the birth of the child. But if it gets narrowed before the birth of the child, it will lead to back pressure changes like TR and right ventricular dysfunction. the most common cause of this anomaly is the intake of NSAID (painkillers) by mother. In our case, the mother was advised stopping usage of NSAID and reassess after 48 hrs .repeat Fetal Echo assessment was performed which showed no TR and ductus was normal sized without narrowing.

This case highlights the importance of avoiding the use of NSAID in pregnancy and successful outcome by early detection of fetal anomalies.
